A Welcome Letter from Mishonda Baldwin
Dear Friends:
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Baldwin for Congress campaign. I am Mishonda Baldwin and I humbly request your support in this bid for the Third Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. I’m looking forward to traveling throughout the district and meeting you all. I am anxious to see your faces, hear your concerns and begin work for you in 2006.
After sitting heartbroken, helpless and paralyzed for 4 days in front of my TV watching the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in a desperate plea for help, and simultaneously feeling angry at the lack of leadership in a time of crisis, I knew something needed to change. Instead of continuing to complain on the sidelines, I felt a sense of urgency to stand up and be counted as a catalyst for moving our community in the right direction with real leadership. That’s the model I learned by watching my mother when I was very young fight for the rights of her fellow workers as a health care union delegate. I remember all too well what it is like to stand on the picket line and yell “scabs go home” to those that wanted to cross the lines. At a very early age I learned the value of standing up when times were hard and to fight for the interests of more than myself.
Because of my educational background and life experiences, I find myself in a position poised to take advantage of several opportunities, but at the same time, I feel rather sad and conflicted. Sad because I also recognize that like many Americans I barely have health insurance and it doesn’t have to be this way. 45 million Americans do not have any health insurance and about 786 thousand of them live in Maryland. Although I don’t wear a uniform anymore, I am still a soldier and I know all too well what it feels like to do what I am told because I love this country but at the same time wonder in the back of my head why people make dumb decisions that put so many lives in danger.
I’m running for Congress because I believe that to whom Much is given, Much is required. I know that I have been blessed to have seen and to have accomplished many things, but for me that is all the more reason that I have a mandate on my life to help make the way easier for other people. We are desperately in need of real leadership that will work for real people. I am a lawyer, seminarian, war veteran and, most importantly, a real person with real experiences. I understand the needs of the people because they are my needs.
In the coming months we face an uphill battle; Maryland has never elected an African American woman to the US House of Representatives. With the help of people like you, I know that we can win! You can help to make victory a reality by contributing to the campaign. We will always need volunteers, contributors and moral support. Any amount that you can afford may be given and please know that it is greatly appreciated. Please check back periodically for updates and I look forward to meeting you soon!
Thank you,
Mishonda Baldwin
