Attorney, Former County Board of License Commissioner, and Desert Storm Veteran Announces Her Candidacy for Open Seat in Maryland’s Third Congressional District

Columbia, MD—Mishonda M. Baldwin strives to make history by becoming the first African American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives in the state of Maryland. Baldwin will announce her candidacy for the open seat in the Third Congressional District on November 7, 2005. The third district includes parts of Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Howard County.

Baldwin served as an Army Intelligence Officer and is a decorated Desert Storm Veteran. In March of 2001, Baldwin was confirmed in the Maryland Senate as one of the youngest Board of License Commissioners and she also served on the Democratic Central Committee. Most recently, Baldwin served as a United States Delegate to Egypt and Jordan for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. She also completed a fellowship in the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women’s inaugural leadership class. She is a dedicated community activist who served on the local and national levels with various political and civic organizations. As Chair of the Alliance of Black Student Professionals, she represented over 40,000 black professional students. As a small business owner, Baldwin provided advice and assistance to emerging growth companies as a mentor for the University of Maryland Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship.

Baldwin’s life-long commitment to public service is her motivation for running for public office: “We’re facing serious issues in this country and it’s time to make room at the table for new ideas.”

A few of Baldwin’s accomplishments include receiving the highest leadership award given by the University of Connecticut, the Spirit of Excellence Award from the University of Baltimore, two Presidential Awards for service from the National Bar Association, and creating history in the State of Connecticut by becoming the first African American woman ROTC Battalion Commander. Baldwin has been featured in various magazines and on television stations throughout the United States, Canada, and the Middle East. Baldwin’s educational background includes a Juris Doctorate, Masters in Counseling Psychology, BS in Social Policy and Planning and she is currently working on a Masters in Divinity.

Baldwin is a dynamic Professional Speaker, Certified Master Facilitator and Licensed Attorney. She hosted the “The Motivated Mission”, a live radio program aired every Sunday at 1:30pm on Spirit 1340 WYCB. She has conducted small group training for hundreds of business, government and military personnel in the areas of diversity, leadership, and team building.
